HISTORY AND TRADITION

The cultivation of olives and the production of oil in the Sorrento Peninsula has ancient origins that have actually to do with Greek mythology. The entire peninsula was in fact consecrated to Minerva, goddess of wisdom and protectress of the olives and olive oil. The ancient Greeks used olive oil as a gift after squeezing it in rudimentary mills. During the archaeological excavations, in the ruins of temples and shrines they found ancient vessels containing oil donations to the goddess Minerva.
Since then, the Sorrento Peninsula has still been well-known for the production of citrus fruits, as well as for its precious and the flavorous oil.

Protected Designation of Origin

The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) is a prestigious brand of legal protection which is given by the European Union to food whose characteristics depend primarily or exclusively from the area where they were produced.

The D.O.P. “Extra Virgin Olive Oil of the Sorrento Peninsula” was recognized in 1997 and Mealitaly, choosing only high quality products, it has selected a set of oils that fully represent this extraordinary territory.

EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL OF SORRENTO PENINSULA PDO

The Extra Virgin Olive Oil of Sorrento Peninsula PDO has a yellow colour, rather intense, with hints of green. From an olfactory point of view, it is extremely aromatic and it is easy to feel in it the notes of rosemary and mint. As for the taste, it is characterized by an original balance of sweet, bitter and spicy.
These special features make it perfect for tasting it raw, or for giving a touch of authenticity to a simple sauce or a tomato salad, or with fish and vegetables.

Mealitaly, in its constant pursuit for the highest quality, wanted to create in addition to its extra virgin PDO oil also its biological version.
Organic farming is a growing method defined and regulated by EU, forbidding the use of synthetic chemicals (fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, and any pesticides in general), or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

The Sorrento Peninsula boasts an ancient tradition in the cultivation of citrus fruits, and among these – the production of PGI lemons.
Oval-shaped, thick skinned and rich in essential oils, with a unique perfume and intense flavor, pulp rich in juice: here are the main features of the lemons of Sorrento Peninsula. The IGP also extends its protection to the production of marmalades, oils and distillates, becoming precious made of its juice.

Also the Sorrento Peninsula oranges as well as lemons, are cultivated according to ancient traditions: under high wooden scaffolding and covered with pergolas straw, in the rich and unspoiled land in which it grows, that make fruits and vegetables really exquisite.

Also mandarin is part of the prestigious category of citrus fruit of the Sorrento Peninsula, and is cultivated according to tradition, rich in flavor and vitamins. Usually used for liquors or marmalades, Mealitaly wanted to create a citrus oil with it, obtaining not only a high quality product, but also an unusual flavor and taste.
